In a world that often feels busy and fragmented, live music has a unique power to slow us down and bring us together. In 2025, the Central Arizona Flute Ensemble (CAFE Flutes) experienced this truth again and again as we shared music across metro Phoenix. While the year included many performances and milestones, what stands out most is not the number of concerts—it’s the moments of connection that happened because people gathered to listen, learn, and engage with one another through music.

What makes a CAFE Flutes concert distinctive is its interactive nature. Our audiences don’t just listen; they participate. We introduce the silver flute family—from the piccolo to the remarkable 10-foot-long contrabass flute—inviting listeners to see, hear, and even hold a flute. Questions are encouraged, stories are shared, and barriers between performers and audience gently dissolve. These moments of exchange often linger long after the final note, turning a concert into a true community gathering.
2025 also marked an exciting year of growth and exploration. We performed in new venues and presented premiere concerts in places that had not previously hosted a flute ensemble of this kind. Each new space brought new listeners, new conversations, and new relationships. Being invited back to several communities for concert series affirmed what we believe deeply: when people feel connected to the music and the musicians, they want to continue the experience.
Collaboration played an important role in strengthening those connections. Working alongside organizations such as Arizona Broadway Theatre, Arizona Art Alliance, Tempe Artists Guild, and WHAM Art Gallery allowed music to intersect with theater, visual art, and community dialogue. These partnerships reminded us that the arts thrive when they work together—creating richer, more inclusive experiences that reach broader audiences.
Behind the scenes, support from cities and foundations helped make this work possible. Grants allowed CAFE Flutes to expand access to live music, bring concerts to communities that might otherwise go without, and continue refining programs that emphasize education and engagement. This support is not just an investment in performances, but in people—audiences who come together, connect with one another, and feel seen and valued through the arts.
Perhaps the most meaningful moments of 2025 were the quiet ones: a resident sharing how a melody brought back a cherished memory; a child’s wide-eyed reaction to the low rumble of the contrabass flute; an audience member staying afterward to say, “I didn’t know music like this could feel so personal.” These experiences remind us why we do what we do.
As we look ahead to 2026, we carry these connections with us. They guide our programming, inspire new ideas, and reaffirm our mission to enrich, engage, and inspire through music. The year ahead will bring new concerts and new communities, but the heart of our work remains the same: creating spaces where people come together, listen deeply, and feel connected—through the shared joy of live music.
We are grateful to everyone who listened, learned, and connected with us in 2025, and we look forward to continuing the conversation in the year to come.
