In July 2026, the Central Arizona Flute Ensemble (CAFE) celebrates its 12th birthday. Since its first rehearsal in July 2014, CAFE has grown from a seven-member flute choir into a nonprofit arts organization presenting approximately 46 concerts each year throughout Central Arizona. In 2021, CAFE became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, expanding its ability to serve communities through partnerships with libraries, senior communities, churches, schools, arts organizations, and community presenters.
Anniversaries are a natural time to reflect. Looking back over the past 12 years, CAFE has learned many lessons—not only about music, but about the people who share it with us.
- Every audience is different.
No two audiences are alike. A children’s library program, a church service, an art gallery performance, and a senior community concert each bring different interests, experiences, and expectations. Rather than presenting the same program everywhere, CAFE adapts each performance to fit the audience.
- Music brings people together.
Whether audience members are meeting for the first time or have known each other for years, music creates shared experiences. Singing together, clapping along, or simply listening side by side strengthens a sense of community.
- Curiosity is contagious.
One of the most common comments CAFE hears is, “I never knew there were so many kinds of flutes!” The piccolo, alto, bass, and ten-foot contrabass flute often spark conversations long before the first piece begins.
- Learning makes listening more enjoyable.
A brief introduction about a composer, a historical event, or the inspiration behind a piece gives audiences another way to connect with the music. People often tell us they hear something new because they understand a little more about what they are hearing.
- Holding an instrument changes everything.
During many interactive programs, audience members are invited to hold and examine members of the flute family. Feeling the weight of a bass flute or seeing the keys of a contrabass flute up close transforms curiosity into discovery.
- Familiar music creates lasting memories.
Whether it’s a Broadway favorite, a patriotic song, a folk tune, or a holiday classic, familiar melodies often bring smiles, stories, and shared memories. Music has a remarkable way of connecting people with important moments in their lives.
- Participation makes every concert unique.
Some audiences sing. Others clap, play percussion instruments, ask thoughtful questions, or simply enjoy lively conversation after the concert. No two performances are ever exactly the same because every audience contributes something different.
- Returning matters.
One visit is rewarding. Returning to the same community is even more meaningful. Over time, familiar faces become friends, conversations continue, and music becomes part of an ongoing relationship rather than a single event.
- Partnerships make everything possible.
CAFE is grateful for the libraries, senior communities, churches, schools, galleries, community organizations, presenters, volunteers, donors, and grant funders who make these performances possible. Every concert reflects a shared commitment to bringing music into the community.

Four original members are still making music together.
Although CAFE has welcomed new musicians over the years, four of the original seven members continue to perform with the ensemble. Their continuity, combined with fresh ideas from newer members, has helped the organization grow while remaining true to its mission.
- Music belongs to everyone.
Some people attend concerts regularly. Others may be hearing a live chamber ensemble for the very first time. CAFE has learned that meaningful musical experiences are not limited by age, background, or musical knowledge. Everyone is welcome.
- We are still learning.
Perhaps the most important lesson is that there is always more to discover. Every performance teaches CAFE something new about music, audiences, and community. Those experiences continue to shape future programs and inspire new ideas.
Who Is CAFE?
CAFE is a seven-member traveling flute choir dedicated to enriching, enlightening, and inspiring Central Arizona residents through interactive concerts and educational programs that showcase the diverse voices of the flute family. While the ensemble performs in many settings—including libraries, churches, schools, galleries, festivals, and community events—its outreach programs place special emphasis on bringing music to senior communities.
At every concert, the goal is the same: to create an engaging musical experience that encourages learning, participation, curiosity, and meaningful community connections.
As CAFE begins its 13th year, the ensemble looks forward to continuing that journey—one audience, one partnership, and one concert at a time.
