From our earliest concerts in 2014 to our most recent performances, CAFE Flutes has witnessed firsthand the powerful connection between music, memory, and emotion. Whether we’re playing a familiar show tune for a senior audience, a Disney favorite for children, or a seasonal carol that transcends generations, we see how music stirs memories, deepens emotional responses, and builds a shared experience among listeners.
One concert attendee summed up this effect perfectly: “Emotionally invigorating! Beautiful and life-lifting!”
Music as a Bridge to the Past

CAFE at Scottsdale’s McDowell Village Senior Community
For many audience members, especially older adults, music can act as a time machine. A few familiar notes from a piece like Moon River or Somewhere Over the Rainbow can transport someone back to a particular decade, a milestone event, or even a fleeting moment from their youth. We’ve seen residents in senior living communities close their eyes, smile, and begin quietly singing along—sometimes even swaying in their seats—when we play music from their formative years.
These moments are more than pleasant nostalgia. Research supports what we observe: music stimulates areas of the brain associated with long-term memory. For individuals living with dementia or Alzheimer’s, familiar melodies often spark recognition when other forms of memory may be less accessible. We’ve received feedback from caregivers who say a resident will remember a song we played for hours or even days after the concert, sometimes talking about it in remarkable detail.
One listener described this connection after a library performance: “CAFE’s concert at Sun Lake’s Robson Library enthralled all who attended.”
Eliciting Emotions Across Generations

CAFE concerts are interactive
The emotional response to music isn’t limited to memories of the past. It also has the ability to shape the present moment for listeners of all ages. At library concerts, children often express pure joy when we play energetic selections like Disney’s Under the Sea or the lively Frosty the Snowman. They’ll tap their feet, clap in rhythm, or join in with small percussion instruments we provide.
For teens and adults, certain harmonies and timbres evoke a different kind of response—sometimes peaceful reflection, sometimes excitement. A slow, lyrical arrangement of Ashoken Farewell may create a sense of calm, while an upbeat jazz medley can generate spontaneous laughter and applause. Our job as performers is to be sensitive to these reactions and to adjust our pacing and energy accordingly, creating an emotional journey rather than just a sequence of songs.
One audience member reflected on this shared connection:
“The introductions to each piece were lovely, but the absolute best part of this performance was the joy and passion all the musicians brought to the music. You all emanated a love for playing which is unmissable, unmistakable, and infectious. You are masterful at your craft while remaining welcoming, unpretentious, approachable, personable, and delightful – Bravo!!!”
Crafting Playlists with Purpose

CAFE at Fountain Hills Library
Our awareness of music’s impact on memory and emotion directly shapes how we prepare each performance. Before creating a playlist, we consider the age group, cultural background, and specific setting of the concert. For senior audiences, we prioritize pieces from the 1940s through 1980s, along with classical selections they may have grown up hearing. In more diverse community settings, we include cultural songs that reflect the local demographic, creating moments of recognition for different audience members.
Seasonal timing plays an important role as well. Holiday concerts include international carols, winter favorites, and audience participation in festive numbers—often with sleigh bells and maracas in hand. For summer performances, we may select lighter, more playful pieces that suit the season’s relaxed mood.
Live Performance as a Shared Emotional Experience

Sharing Holiday Joy
While recordings can bring comfort and familiarity, live music offers something uniquely powerful. In person, the physical vibrations of sound, the visual interaction between musicians, and the shared atmosphere all intensify emotional responses. Our seven-member flute choir functions without a conductor, relying on subtle cues, body language, and a deep awareness of each other’s playing. This creates a unified, expressive sound that feels personal to the listener.
The effect is often mutual—audience emotions influence our performance just as our music affects them. A particularly engaged audience can bring an extra spark to our playing, while moments of stillness and focus in the room encourage us to lean into more expressive phrasing.
Stories That Stay With Us

Creating a lasting memory
Over the years, we’ve gathered stories from audience members that affirm music’s enduring influence. One woman told us that hearing our arrangement of In the Mood reminded her of learning to dance with her late husband, bringing back emotions both tender and joyful. A father at a library concert shared that his young daughter began asking for flute music at bedtime after seeing our performance. A retired band director once said that hearing the bass flute for the first time made him “feel like a student again, curious and inspired.”
These stories remind us that our work extends beyond entertainment. We are facilitating moments of connection—between past and present, between emotion and memory, and between people.
Looking Ahead
As we continue to perform for diverse audiences, CAFE Flutes remains committed to exploring music’s capacity to awaken memories and deepen emotional bonds. We will keep refining our repertoire, tailoring our playlists to our listeners, and remaining responsive to the subtle cues that tell us when a piece has truly resonated.
Music is more than sound—it is a living, breathing art form that connects people in profound ways. From the first bright notes of the piccolo to the warm, grounding tones of the contrabass flute, every voice in our ensemble contributes to an experience that can linger long after the final note fades. And for us, that lingering impact is the greatest measure of success.
About CAFE Flutes
CAFE is a 7-member traveling flute choir that enriches, enlightens, and inspires Central Arizona residents by presenting interactive concerts and educational programs that showcase the flute family’s diverse instruments.
The 7-member group offers interactive concert programs that feature various musical styles: show tunes, patriotic, folk, oldies, pop, and classical. They demonstrate all their instruments, including the 10-foot-long contrabass flute, and introduce each piece with interesting tidbits about the music and composer.
The flutists take it a step further during the concert by passing around demonstration flutes and piccolos, allowing the audience to experience the instruments firsthand.
Since 2014, they have performed over 250 concerts, including Desert Botanical Garden, Mesa Art Center, senior communities libraries, art galleries, Tempe History Museum, Arizona Broadway Theatre, and Peoria Center for Performing Arts.
With a music library of over 150 pieces, CAFE Flutes can customize their concert to fit the occasion. Themed programs include a selection of Patriotic, St. Patrick’s Day, Summer, Show Tunes, Singalong, Mother’s Day, and Winter Holiday melodies.
Are you looking for a fun, educational experience? “Fascinating Flutes” is a 2-person demonstration of flutes worldwide through live performance, storytelling, videos, photos, and sound clips. Diverse flutes are sent around the room for listeners to examine up close in this 1-hour presentation.
Music creates community while activating memories, movement, and emotions all at the same time! Research confirms that listening to live music, especially with others, enhances overall health. CAFE harnesses the power of music to connect people in our community.
