Many traditional concerts present music as a one-way experience: performers play, and the audience listens. At CAFE Flutes, we aim for something quite different. Our belief is that music becomes most powerful when it functions as a conversation — a shared experience that invites listeners to reflect, respond, and connect.

Performing at Acoya Shea Retirement Community in Scottsdale January 2026
This approach is rooted in how we program and present our concerts. Every performance includes introductions to pieces, demonstrations of instruments, and opportunities for interaction that transform a recital into a dialogue. In the process, the audience doesn’t just hear music — they engage with it, relate it to their own experiences, and leave with something meaningful.
Interactive Concerts: More Than Listening
From our concerts in senior communities to free library performances and holiday events, CAFE Flutes is devoted to breaking down barriers between performers and listeners. Instead of handing out printed programs, members take turns standing to introduce each piece, offering fascinating context about the music, composer, or style. This conversational introduction opens the door for deeper engagement and understanding.

ABTea at Arizona Broadway Theatre
During December and January performances, this interactive approach proved especially moving. At our Holiday Delights concerts, listeners joined in with sleigh bells and small percussion instruments during festive numbers. Children at library performances played along, making music an active, joyful experience. In senior living communities, residents responded with smiles, memories, and warm conversation after the final note echoed.
Audience Voices: Music as Shared Experience
Audience feedback consistently affirms the power of this approach. One listener shared, “Emotionally invigorating! Beautiful and life-lifting!” — a testament not just to the music, but to the emotional connection that arises when music feels personal. Another wrote after a recent performance, “The introductions to each piece were lovely, but the absolute best part of this performance was the joy and passion all the musicians brought to the music. You all emanated a love for playing which is unmissable, unmistakable, and infectious.”
At CAFE’s Holiday Flute Concert in Scottsdale, one senior said, “It was just wonderful! I hadn’t heard music like that in a long time,” and several others noted how the concert brought back cherished memories. This sense of recollection shows how music can unlock personal histories and emotional landscapes, turning listening into a shared conversation about life, experience, and meaning.
Programming That Invites Engagement
The way we choose music plays a big role in creating this conversation. Our repertoire spans classical and jazz to Disney songs, holiday favorites, and cultural melodies. For instance:
- In December, Holiday Delights concerts featured seasonal classics and international carols to offer variety and inclusivity.
- In February, Flute Choir Extravaganza! at the Musical Instrument Museum blended works from Gershwin to Queen, expanding the conversation beyond genre lines.
- CAFE collaborated with Peoria’s Arizona Broadway Theatre to present an Afternoon Tea event playing songs about Love & Friendship/
This variety allows audience members to connect with music they know while discovering new sounds, all in an approachable setting.
Instrument Demonstrations: A Conversation Starter
A major part of making concerts conversational is the flute family demonstration. Hearing about and then seeing instruments up close — from the piccolo to the rare contrabass flute — invites questions and curiosity. Many audience members are surprised to learn how many flutes exist, how different textures feel and sound, or how a large flute produces deep, rich tones.
This tactile element changes the dynamic. People don’t just hear the music; they touch it, see it, and then want to talk about it.
Music as Community Building

Building community through music
By inviting dialogue, CAFE Flutes builds community through music. Listeners connect with performers and with one another. After concerts, people share memories sparked by the music, ask questions about technique or repertoire, or simply express appreciation for the shared experience.
As one library patron said after a December concert, “You all make music feel like a conversation. I left feeling more connected — to the music and to the people around me.”
Continuing the Conversation

CAFE at Mesa Art Center
CAFE Flutes continues to bring this conversational approach to audiences throughout the year — from free community concerts to interdisciplinary collaborations with visual arts organizations. Each performance invites participation, curiosity, and connection.
Music, when shared as dialogue rather than delivered as spectacle, becomes something more: it becomes a conversation, an emotional bridge, and a way of bringing people together.
